How to Search Criminal Dockets
Indiana MyCase is the easiest public route into a Newton County criminal docket. Pick Case, Name, or Attorney as your search type. If you know the court, choose Newton Superior Court and the Criminal & Citation category. A full case number works best. A Newton case number opens with a court code. It looks like 56D01 and then carries the filing period, case type, and sequence. Name searches get sharper when you add status and filing dates.
One search route is rarely enough. Indiana Court Calendar lists current public hearings inside its rolling window. For older, certified, or missing material, go straight to the Newton County Clerk of the Circuit Court at 219-474-6081. Stop at the counter at 201 N. Third Street in Kentland during county office hours. You can also mail a precise request to PO Box 49, Kentland, IN 47951. The state does not list a Newton public terminal. Call ahead before counting on one.
- Open MyCase and choose Case or Name.
- Select Newton Superior Court and the criminal category.
- Enter the full number or a narrow party-name query.
- Match the court, type, filing date, and status before opening the result.
- Read the newest events, settings, charge fields, and disposition entries.
- Ask the Clerk for a missing document or certified copy.
Newton Criminal Cases Use 56D01
Local Rule 56-8 puts adult criminal cases in Newton Superior Court. Its Odyssey code is 56D01, and the court answers at 219-474-5569. That makes Superior Court the right first filter. Use it for nearly every Newton County criminal docket search. Juvenile cases sit in Circuit Court. They may carry confidentiality limits, so treat them as a separate category rather than ordinary adult results.
One exception matters here. Nonsupport child-support charges can be filed in Newton Circuit Court, code 56C01. If a known criminal case fails to appear under Superior Court, run both Newton court codes. Then confirm the assignment with the Clerk. Remember that a blank result never proves a case does not exist.
Quick route: Call Superior Court at 219-474-5569 for an uncertain adult criminal setting, or the Clerk at 219-474-6081 for the public file.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
Indiana names the event register a chronological case summary, or CCS. A Newton County criminal docket can hold a lot. Basic case data, charges, parties, counsel, settings, public documents, financial entries, bond details when present, and a dated event history all fit there. Read those fields side by side. A status like “Decided” alone does not say whether the outcome was a dismissal, plea, conviction, sentence, or appeal.
| Case number | Court prefix, filing period, case type, and sequence, such as 56D01-1608-MR-000002. |
|---|---|
| Charges | The cited statute, offense description, and degree or classification. |
| Parties | State, prosecutor, defendant, attorneys, and public bar-number data. |
| Settings | Initial hearing, pretrial, trial, sentencing, review, or other dated court events. |
| Disposition | Status and dated events checked against the detailed order or CCS entry. |
| Documents | Selected public orders or filings, when MyCase supplies a link. |
The financial block may be stale or partial. A missing bond block does not prove bond never existed. For a critical balance, result, or certified document, rely on the clerk’s official record.
Newton Converted Criminal Events
Newton Circuit and Superior courts joined the Odyssey court list on December 2, 2019. Entries carried over from the old system may show as “Converted Event.” That label marks data migration and nothing more. It is not a new filing. It is not a judgment. It is not the date of the underlying act. Check the event date, the description, and the entries around it before concluding anything.
Even so, a converted Newton County criminal docket can keep a full chain: filing, initial hearing, plea, conviction, sentencing, notice of appeal, orders, and document links. The older detail may look less uniform than a fully electronic case. When the chronology shows a gap, ask the Clerk. The source record may live in a legacy system, paper file, microfilm, or archive.
Indiana’s criminal expungement law is the official source for how qualifying records can be sealed.

A granted expungement can pull a case out of an ordinary public search. So a missing result is never the whole history.
Stages on a Criminal Docket
A Newton County criminal docket usually opens with a filing and an initial court event. From there, entries may cover conferences, motions, plea activity, trial, judgment, sentencing, review, or appeal. Each label marks a step. It is not a verdict on guilt. The actual result must come from the judgment or event detail. A charge is only an allegation. An initial hearing is only a setting.
Docket flow: Filing › Initial Hearing › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
Old and current settings can sit side by side in a CCS. Always check the newest dated order, then compare it with the Court Calendar. That calendar reaches back just seven days and forward four weeks. A setting outside that window needs a check. So does one the selector does not show. Confirm it with Superior Court or the Clerk.
Newton Charge and Setting Terms
Short labels carry very different kinds of information. Keeping them apart prevents the most common reading errors in a Newton County criminal docket.
- CCS
- The chronological case summary, Indiana’s dated register of case activity.
- Charge classification
- The degree or level assigned to an alleged offense, shown with its statute and description.
- Initial hearing
- An early court setting, not the final result.
- Converted Event
- An entry migrated from an older court data source.
- Disposition
- The recorded resolution, best checked against the detailed order.
MyCase may also show a warrant indicator, financial transactions, or bond data when public and present. Those blocks never replace the event chronology. Their absence is not a fact you can rely on.
Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
Newton Superior Court holds most adult criminal dockets under the local allocation rule. Newton Circuit Court takes the narrow nonsupport exception plus juvenile assignments. Both sit inside Indiana’s trial-court system, and one unified Newton County Clerk keeps the public case records and CCS entries for both.
| Office | Criminal role | Public contact |
|---|---|---|
| Newton Superior Court | Most adult criminal cases; code 56D01 | 219-474-5569 |
| Newton Circuit Court | Nonsupport exception and juvenile allocation; code 56C01 | 219-474-5131 |
| Newton County Clerk | CCS, public files, copies, and routing | 219-474-6081 |
An appeal leaves the trial court for the Court of Appeals of Indiana. The Newton trial docket in CCS may still show a notice, a transcript request, or a cross-reference. The appellate docket itself is separate.
Newton Problem-Solving Docket Check
Indiana runs problem-solving courts built on treatment, supervision, judicial monitoring, and team review. The official problem-solving courts overview lays out that statewide framework. It does not confirm a Newton-specific public specialty docket. Ask the Clerk whether a case carries a public treatment or diversion designation. Ask also whether a separate calendar exists.

The statewide model keeps internal treatment notes and participant records out of public view. Newton County's infraction-deferral program covers traffic matters only, so it is not proof of a criminal problem-solving court.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
Indiana Access Rule 4 opens with a simple promise of public access. Access Rule 5 then lists what stays closed. Sealed cases, juvenile information, protected identifiers, and victim or witness details can be withheld or redacted. Certain mental-health material may be withheld too, along with other listed content. Cases a judge has expunged may drop out of ordinary MyCase results.
When online material falls short, ask the Clerk for the exact public CCS, event, order, or document. A mailed request should name the court, the case number, the item, its date, the copy type, your return address, and a way to confirm payment. The clerk fax is 219-474-5749. Local rules restrict faxed pleadings, and fax copy service is not promised.
Key rules:
Access Rule 9 provides a verified written request and possible hearing process for an excluded record. It is not a search filter.
Indiana Code 5-14-3 addresses public-agency records, but does not override court confidentiality rules.
Need a transcript? Ask the court or the Clerk for the court reporter. Before sending funds for a certified copy, confirm the exact item, the page count, the seal, the total cost, and the delivery method.
Ask for the Complete Newton File
A Newton County criminal docket entry with no document link calls for the case number and the exact event title written down. Call the Clerk first. Say plainly whether you want a plain copy, a certified copy, an order, a judgment, or a transcript. The clerk holds the filed records, while a court reporter handles the proceeding transcript. Those are two different products.
Walk-in service happens at the county courthouse in Kentland. Mail reaches the Clerk at PO Box 49. The public may also send a reasonably particular written records request, subject to court-access limits. An agency access dispute can go to Indiana's Public Access Counselor, while an excluded court record follows the judicial Rule 9 route.
MyCase is a free discovery view. The official criminal record stays with the originating Newton court or Clerk.
