Searching Cases by Name
Indiana MyCase is the free, official place to begin a Newton County case search. Pick Name mode for a person or a business. People generally need a last name. First and middle names just narrow things down, and a business entry works on its own rather than alongside a person's name.
- Choose Name search and enter the last name, then add a first name if known.
- Select Newton Circuit Court or Newton Superior Court when the court is known.
- Limit by category, open or closed status, and filing-date range when a common name returns too much.
- Compare case number, court, case type, filing date, and status before opening a result.
- Open the case summary and read the newest events, settings, and public documents.
The official search form has more controls than a simple name box.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Conditional | Needed for a person-name search and for a date-of-birth filter. |
| First / Middle | Text | No | Used with last name, not alone. |
| Business | Text | Alternative | Do not combine with a person's last name. |
| Court | Dropdown | No | Choose 56C01 Circuit or 56D01 Superior. |
| Category / Status | Options | No | Limit criminal, civil, family, probate, open, closed, or all. |
| File Date | Date range | No | Narrows by filing date, not hearing date. |
Three Newton MyCase Search Modes
MyCase offers three separate paths. Case mode takes a case number, citation number, or cross-reference number; Name mode covers parties and businesses; Attorney mode takes a bar number or an attorney name. Mixing fields from incompatible paths can block a useful query.
| Mode | Use It When | Strongest Input |
|---|---|---|
| Case | A notice, citation, or prior entry provides an identifier | Full formatted Newton case number |
| Name | The number is unknown | Last name plus court and category |
| Attorney | Tracking public matters tied to counsel | Bar number or attorney name |
The official MyCase search tips lay out these rules in full. No account or payment is needed for a public search, and the state page shows the same guidance that governs Newton County queries.

Those rules help prevent broad results and failed searches caused by incompatible fields.
Searching by Case Number
Every Newton County case number follows Indiana's uniform structure. That structure runs county and court, filing year, case type, then sequence. Newton Circuit Court numbers start with 56C01. Newton Superior Court numbers start with 56D01. A full example looks like 56D01-2026-XX-000123, with XX holding the real case-type code. That shape shows form only, not an actual case. Copy a number from a notice exactly, keeping hyphens and leading zeroes. If the exact form fails, the official tips cover formatted and unformatted searches. Check that the returned court prefix matches your paper. One Newton County Clerk keeps both courts' records. Circuit and Superior remain separate court records, though.
Newton Name Search Pitfalls
Two tools widen a stubborn name search. A trailing wildcard broadens the start of a first, last, or business name, while sounds-like search catches similar spellings; MyCase will not run both at once. Date of birth cannot stand alone, and a first name cannot replace a required last name. Results stop at 1,000. If a Newton County case search hits that cap, tighten it with a court, category, status, filing range, or exact number. A captcha may appear to prevent data mining. An empty response is limited evidence too. Try a spelling variation, drop a bad filter, use the case number, or call the Newton County Clerk at 219-474-6081.
Note: A failed name query does not prove that Newton County has no case or older clerk-held record.
What a Case Search Returns
Click a result row and you land on the case summary. It is formally the chronological case summary or CCS. It is a dated register, not a narrative account. Read the case identity first, then walk the events in date order. A motion entry is only a request. A later order shows what the judge actually did.
| Case Number | The Newton court prefix, filing year, case type, and sequence. |
|---|---|
| Court | Newton Circuit Court 56C01 or Newton Superior Court 56D01. |
| Filed Date | The date the matter entered that court record. |
| Status | Open, closed, or another current label with a status date. |
| Parties | Public names and roles, with attorneys and bar numbers when shown. |
| Events | Dated filings, notices, hearings, orders, disposition, and appeal steps. |
| Documents | Links for selected public files; absence of a link does not prove no file exists. |
| Settings | Past or future hearing entries that should be checked against the Court Calendar. |
Financial sections may appear, but MyCase warns that amounts may not be current. For an official balance or a certified record, contact the clerk.
Newton's Odyssey Start Date
Newton Circuit Court and Newton Superior Court joined the statewide Odyssey list. The joining date was December 2, 2019. The official Odyssey court list confirms both entries and their codes. That date does not mean every older Newton record starts there. Nor does it mean each paper file is online. Converted legacy data can show up inside the newer system.

The rollout date explains why an older chronology can look different from a newer electronic filing history. A “Converted Event” label marks migrated data. It is not a new filing, ruling, or disposition. For older gaps, call the Clerk, visit the counter at 201 N. Third Street in Kentland, or send a focused request to PO Box 49, Kentland, IN 47951.
Statewide vs County Case Search
Newton County publishes no separate local case database. MyCase serves as both the statewide public search and the ordinary online route into the two Newton trial courts. The county's role begins once online data is absent, restricted, too old, or in need of certification.
| Channel | What It Provides | When to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Indiana MyCase | Free public search, CCS events, settings, and some documents | First search for current public Newton cases |
| Court Calendar | Short rolling view of public hearings | Confirm a near-term Superior Court setting |
| Newton County Clerk | Official record inspection, older files, copies, and certification | When MyCase is incomplete or an official copy is needed |
The official MyCase help page states that the online display is not the official court record. That page spells out the public access framework Newton County searches run under.

After you locate a case, compare its settings with the Newton County court calendar for hearing details.
Newton Public Document Limits
Many public MyCase documents can be read without charge. Not every event has an image, though. Indiana guidance describes access to many civil orders and documents, final criminal orders and judgments, certain miscellaneous criminal documents, pending or denied expungement materials, and appellate filings. Coverage varies by court, type, conversion date, confidentiality, and upload practice. The state's document-access matrix shows exactly which Newton County filings carry public images.

That matrix also explains why two public cases may offer different document links. Ask the Clerk for a missing filed item or a certified copy.
Newton Party Access Is Different
Public docket searching and party access are two different things in Indiana. A party to a Newton County case can create an Indiana Courts account, click "Is this your case?", and ask for an access code by mail, by phone, or at the counter. Once issued, a code works for 21 days. The connected party access then lasts 180 days, limited to whatever documents are actually available. The state party-access instructions spell out the full setup on the official page.

Don't confuse a party code with a public-search account. It never unseals confidential material, and attorneys work through the separate Courts Portal instead.
Access and Restricted Cases
Indiana Access Rule 4 begins with a presumption of openness. Its partner, Access Rule 5, then walls off protected cases, documents, and personal identifiers. So a Newton County court docket search can come back thin for reasons that have nothing to do with the clerk. Juvenile matters and other shielded categories may simply not appear. Cases that a judge has expunged drop out of public search once the order is granted, and protection-order matters may sit in Indiana's separate Protection Order Search rather than an ordinary name search.
A blank result does not mean the record is gone. It means the rule may be hiding it. Ask the Clerk whether a public court record exists and which rule controls access, since Rule 9 offers a path, a verified request plus a hearing, for some excluded records. The court still makes the final call. And Indiana's Access to Public Records Act cannot override a court-record confidentiality rule.
Official record rule: MyCase is a discovery view, not the certified record. Verify a material event or full file through the Newton County Clerk.
Pick up the phone when in doubt. The Clerk answers at 219-474-6081, Newton Circuit Court at 219-474-5131, and Newton Superior Court at 219-474-5569. Those calls and counter visits also sort out uncertain court allocation, old files, and public documents missing online.
